Acid
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  

Adhesives
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  

Aerosol Cans
When containers still have product in them or are still under pressure, most are considered hazardous waste and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  If they contained food-related products(empty) or are empty containers that did not contain paint, pesticides/insecticide, or hazardous liquid you may dispose of these in your curbside bin or one of our convenient drop off sites.

Agricultural Plastic
Agricultural plastic cannot be recycled; please dispose of it in the garbage. Burning agricultural plastic is illegal. Burning plastic releases toxic chemicals into the air.

Air Conditioners
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  

Alkaline Batteries
Rechargeable and alkaline batteries (AAA,AA,C,D,etc) are accepted at several locations throughout Decatur County. Please call us at 812-663-0960 for location information. Car Batteries must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  If you are recycling 9 volt or rechargeable batteries please tape both ends of the battery terminal to prevent fire

All-Purpose Cleaner
This is a hazardous material in its concentrated form. Dilute and use or bring to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  

Aluminum Cans
Accepted for curbside recycling and at all drop off sites. Please rinse out any remaining liquid or food from the cans. Check your Yellow Pages for scrap metal dealers who may be willing to accept your cans for payment. We do not give payment.

Aluminum Siding
Aluminum siding can be recycled at most metal recycling businesses. Do not put in recycling bins. If still usable, consider donating to Habitat for Humanity.

Ammonia
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  

Ammunition
Contact your local law enforcement agency for information.

Answering Machines
These may be brought to one of yearly Electronic Recycling Events (please check our calendar for dates) or at Tox-a-way Day.

Antifreeze

Ant Poison
This is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  

Appliances
Appliances may be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  You can also call local metal scrap dealers such as River Metals Recycling (812-663-5587) and they may be able to accept and pay you for the item.

Area Rugs
First, if there is any wear left in the rug, consider finding someone who could use it. Avoiding the landfill or transfer station is generally a good thing, but it may be your only option. Our recycle drop off and curbside containers cannot accept this item. Decatur Hills Landfill in Decatur County can accept this item for a fee.

Arm Chair
If furniture is in good condition, donate it to a local charitable organization. Check with your local trash hauler for other options. Decatur Hills Landfill in Decatur County can accept this item for a fee. You cannot recycle this item.  

Art & Hobby Paint
If the paint can be cleaned up with water, let it dry out and dispose of in regular trash. If paint thinners or solvents are necessary for clean up, then this must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  

Arts & Crafts Supplies
Check with your local schools, youth organizations, or Sunday school classes to find out if they are interested in a donation of used or leftover art supplies in good condition. Items not suitable for donation may be garbage (for instance, a worn-out paintbrush). Oil based products must be taken to Tox-a-Way Day that occurs the first Saturday after Labor Day from 8-3 p.m. at the Decatur County Fairgrounds.

Asbestos
Requires special handling by certified contractors. Please call a local landfill about possible options. This material has to be put in a special type of container to properly transport.

Ashes
Ashes are not recyclable, but may be placed in the garbage once they are stone cold!

Asphalt
Asphalt is considered a bulky waste item for the landfill. There may also be asphalt companies in the area who could reuse it.

Asphalt Sealer
If the asphalt sealer is latex-based (you can clean up with water), it must be dried out and then disposed with your trash. If it is not latex-based, it is a hazardous material and must be brought to one of our Tox-a-Way days throughout the year. Please call or visit our website for Tox-a-Way event dates.  

Asphalt Shingles
May require special handling by a certified contractor.  Check with your local transfer station or trash handler.

Automobiles
Salvage businesses such as River Metals Recycling.
